1st Thoughts on the Anniversary Event – Everquest 2

When I first heard about this event, I was pretty excited about it. I played Everquest 1 for nearly a year and experienced much of it either directly or through others who were also playing at the time. I really enjoyed the overall world and lore of Norrath and spent a lot of time in Everquest 1 just exploring it.

So yesterday evening I logged in and received the mail directing me to Antonica and off I went to the lighthouse with Sabine. At first, I couldn’t figure out what I needed to do. There were no quest NPC’s directing me to a portal, so I asked in guild if there was anyone I needed to talk to before entering the portal. Answer seemed to be no, so I went in and everything was deep yellow and majorly heroic. Yikes!

Now Sabine is level 31 and has all her CA’s mastered up to that point, is wearing mastercrafted jewelry as well as the level 20 quest armor. She also just happened to be already mentored to level 20 as she had been doing Antonica quests. So I unmentored her and everything was green at level 31. She was able to solo the zone, happily get her two platinum coins and leave. She bought Fippy and Alli-dinosaur plushies.

Then the letter said to go to Enchanted Lands. She ventured there and again everything was deep yellow and heroic. This time the mentoring trick didn’t work though and she died in two hits trying to solo the yellow heroic centaur. A friend who had a character who wasn’t already locked out of the zone for 18 hours came in with Sabine to help and Sabine was able to finish that instance too. She spent her new coins on the harp and the Quillmane plushie.

And that’s it.

Because the zones do not scale to character level, Sabine is too low level to enjoy any of the rest of the time-limited event. Every 18 hours she can do the two zones she’s qualified to enter due to level but she’s barred from the rest of the event content.

Now yes, I can pull out my level-locked level 80 character to potentially complete the rest of the portals (assuming that a group will feel sorry enough for him to let him tag along on the last portal as he’ll be useless with everything being 10 levels higher), but I just don’t want to play a tank character right now. So although I’ll pull him out of harvest-mode to drudge through the event with a tank so that I can at least experience all of the portals once, I am not happy at all about it. Every other world event scales to the level of the character, but for some reason, this event locks out everyone but geared up level 90’s from getting the most out of the event content.

If this even weren’t going away in a week — and perhaps for all time — it wouldn’t be an issue since lower level characters would be just be able to look forward to the content when they finally reached the appropriate levels, but as this is a time-limited event (and not all of us want to rush to 90), it’s extremely disappointing to miss out solely because of level.

I feel worse for the players who are newer to the game and don’t have any higher level characters at all. They will just miss out altogether.

On a positive note, I did enjoy the NPC comments within the Fippy and Quillmane zones. Couldn’t stop laughing about them!

I will add that the fact that all of these zones are super heroic, require groups unless you are uber-equipped, and have 18 hour lockout timers remind me of some of the reasons why I ultimately stopped playing Everquest 1. Β There just wasn’t enough to do (at that time) outside of full groups or raids. I think once I get one of all of the items on the coin vendor, I’ll be thankfully done with these. It’s just such a chore to play my tank when I’m just not even in the mood to log in with him.

I don’t care at all about any of the fabled loot as it is only the house items that interest me. I’d just like to be able to enjoy the event with the characters I enjoy playing. If there were alternate portals that scaled to the levels of the characters, whether grouped or solo (I really don’t care), but only dropped the coins, that would be fine with me too.

This weekend I’ll have more time to spend with the portals so perhaps some of my viewpoint will change, but it’s just so agonizing to only have *one* character option to do the event, and it just happens to be the character I *least* want to play. Ugh!

hmmm… what server are you on? If you are on Crushbone, I’d be happy to invite your characters along for the ride whenever me and my guildies head out to the portals. πŸ™‚

    many greetings

Well drat, I’m on Antonia Bayle! If I were on Crushbone though, I’d love to take you up on that offer. πŸ™‚

Hopefully, I won’t have issues getting a group for the rest of these. Haven’t had a huge amount of time to play since the event started, so haven’t yet really tried getting a group together outside of duo.

Then I hope the weekend will bring a flood of /lfg for you to team up with! Enjoy the rest of the event and I’m sure you’ll easily get enough coins for all those lovely house items. πŸ˜‰

BTW your blog makes me feel good about being a gamer girl myself. Keep writing! <3

I’ll definitely have to get the coins as at least half of my characters would never forgive me if we didn’t get all the plushies, and the books, and…and…

    I feel your pain…. again.

I guess they were trying to get as much as the original EQ1 feel as possible with this event so things are like that.

I did them today and was fortunate enough to be able to complete most of them with Ramalis. Only one I couldn’t do was the Lavastorm one since it was tricky to get it right. With a healer that one should be doable too, I think.

Anyhoo, hit me up during the weekend if you want to group for those. If someone didn’t kidnap me for anything else I will gladly group with you for the event.

I never played EQ1 but some of them are hilarious and are worth at least seeing it just for that. My favorite one was the Sinking Sands one. πŸ™‚

I can’t wait to see Sinking Sands! *Everyone* has been talking about that one.

I’ll definitely give you a holler and see what you’re up to. I doubt Alarac would be able to solo any of these instances in just Kunark armor and no epic weapon.

Not counting the house items, the best part of the event has been all of the funny NPC comments…at least in the two zones I’ve been in so far!

I’m glad we were able to do all of the portals last night. I had a blast!

I can help you do quests and PQ’s for armor since Alarac is now going to level. πŸ™‚

Great, thank you! Alarac still won’t be making levels very fast since I’ll be focused on Sabine, but it will be moving!

I’m still laughing over Sinking Sands. πŸ™‚

Yes, I wish they had made it scale to the level of the character and then give level appropriate loot.

I am pleased with the level 90 loot, it really helped Celesteral big time.

She’s the only one that I can do them all with. This is because I worked my butt of getting her armor and stuff, mostly solo too. My others aren’t so well equipped and need help.

Sinking Sands was my most favorite. Though I have to admit I did kill a bear and felt the wrath of Holly Windstalker in another portal!

I did catch a glimpse of that horrible Holly Windstalker when Sabine went into the Thundering Steppes portal! After noticing that everything was a deep, deep red though, she went right back outside the portal!

Celesteral shot a wolf the other night and then used evac!!! She saw an angry Holly running towards her!

At least she didn’t have a chance to sneak up behind you like what would have happened in EQ1!
